This book is about how 26 Fairmount Avenue came to be. his story is told through little Tomie's eyes. At first they lived in an apartment on Columbus Avenue, with another family living upstairs. A big hurricane hit where they lived, and they had just started building their first house, only for it to be destroyed by the hurricane. Once the hurricane was over, there was a lot of cleaning up to do. So they came together and got it fixed up. It then talked about what the parents went through in their process deciding to build a house, and then it got destroyed. When Tomie was supposed to start Kindergarten he and his mother waled to school until they reached a corner and he wanted to walk by himself. He go to class and asked the teacher when he would learn to read and she told him not until 1st grade and he turned around and left and went home. His mother explained to him that he had to pass Kindergarten in order to get to 1st grade and be able to read. Their new house kept having delays because the people from the city kept coming making the street lower and lower, which made it difficult for workers to get to their new house because it was basically on a hill. They were set to get some more work done but a nor' easter hit making it really muddy. Tomie asked his guardian angel to help them and make it not so muddy anymore and his angel listen because the next day there was no mud, everything was frozen in place. They spent their last Christmas Eve with them and it was bittersweet, but Tomie's mom to;d them they could always come up to the hill and visit with them. While their parents were out at a fancy New Year's Eve dance, so they had their own celebration at home. They ate popcorn, ice cream and drank cokes. A few days later it was time for them to move into their new house. Tomie and his brother arrived at the new house and went and looked at their room and new beds and it was the end for the time being.

I liked this book because it's a cute story about what a family went through to rebuild their new house and all the hiccups they had along the way. I think students would enjoy this book because it's simple yet interesting. I think students in 2nd-5th grade would best benefit from this book. I think I would use this book in a lesson over students possibly having to move. Some students may have extended family members living with them so we could talk about what that's like for them.
